Europe Week | The Future of EU-US Relations: Cooperation, Conflict, or Crisis?

April 9, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

A Europe Week 2018 logo

Since the Second World War, many have considered the United States and Western Europe a ‘security community’ based on political, economic and societal interdependence. However, transatlantic cooperation is sometimes costly; preferences on strategies to cope with common global challenges as much as with the bilateral agenda vary, and thus we at times face a relationship troubled by conflicts. After relatively calm relations during the Obama years, we seem – especially since the Trump administration has come to office – to be running into trouble again, facing a tall list of all kinds of political conflicts. Could this situation get out of control and result in a crisis of transatlantic relations? Moreover, what is meant by a ‘crisis’ and what would be its implications? We ought not assume transatlantic harmony, but we will possibly gain mutually from continuing fruitful cooperation in the future.

Ingo Peters is associate professor of Political Science at the Freie Universität Berlin and executive director of the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy. His teaching and research activities are concentrated on German foreign policy, European security governance and transatlantic relations as well as International Relations. Since 2011 he has been Dean of Studies of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.

Since 1989 he has served as editor of the Center’s publication series (Forschungsberichte Internationale Politik, FIP). Dr. Peters is one of the coordinators of the Euromasters and Transatlantic Masters Programmes at the Otto-Suhr-Institute for Political Science. Additionally, he is member of the steering committee for the Master of Arts Programme in International Relations jointly offered by Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Universität Potsdam.
