Film Screening: ‘Moromeții I’ (1987)

December 3, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

This screening will be split over two days: Thursday, December 3, and Friday, December 4. Part I of the film will be shown on December 3, and part II will be shown on December 4. Both screening events will start at 12pm ET. The Zoom meeting information will be provided upon RSVP, and will be the same for both days.

‘Moromeții I’ (‘The Moromete Family’) is an iconic Romanian movie depicting in neo-realist fashion the dynamics of rural life in a traditional Romanian community before the Second World War and the subsequent advent of communism. As a precursor of the Romanian New Wave, this movie is a must-see for anybody interested in film studies, Eastern Europe, gender studies, Cold War rhetoric, censorship, and more. Due to its success, in 2018 the movie’s director Stere Gulea released a much-awaited sequel, ‘Moromeții II’. Both films are based on books by Marin Preda, one of the most remarkable Romanian authors.

This screening is organized by Dr. Letitia Guran, Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Romance Studies.

Please RSVP for this virtual event. To attend both screening events (on December 3 and December 4), you only need to RSVP once.
