The Jean Monnet Center at the UNC Center for European Studies is pleased to announce a call for applications for a Jean Monnet EU Visiting Scholar. The Visiting Scholar will spend approximately 6 weeks at UNC during the 2018 spring semester (January-April). The scholar will be responsible for teaching a section of the Center’s “European Union Today” 3 credit course (see below for short description) offered to upper-level undergraduates, including Contemporary European Studies majors, and TransAtlantic Masters students. The scholar will be responsible for advising all students in the course on their research papers as well as assigning grades. Students’ research papers may come from a variety of topics.

In addition, the scholar will give a public lecture, provide a blog post about his/her research interests, and can give lectures within other courses. Scholars will also have the opportunity to continue their own research while at UNC, drawing from the university’s vast array of resources as well as contact with renowned Europeanist faculty. A short description of “EU Today”: As a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, the UNC Center for European Studies is offering a 3-credit capstone undergraduate/graduate course designed for seniors and MA students who have been studying Europe and the EU. The course is team-taught by faculty affiliated with the Center, including the Center’s Director John Stephens and our Jean Monnet EU Visiting Scholar. The course will offer students a chance to discuss current issues facing the EU and the EU-US relationship such as EU Enlargement and Democratization, Social Policy, Terrorism, Education, Brexit, and the refugee crisis – as well as the Visiting Scholar’s own research topic – in a colloquium/discussion-focused environment. In addition, students will have the chance to discuss and develop their own research interests and on-going research projects.

ANSWERS TO SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

• Compensation includes a housing allotment up to $2000 and an airfare allotment of $1200 both in the form of a reimbursement (i.e. we can only reimburse actual costs paid). Please note that the scholar must submit all boarding passes and a rental contract for reimbursement. The scholar is responsible for finding their own housing arrangements.
• Teaching costs will be paid to the scholar at the rate of $200 per teaching hour.
• Please note that banking and transfer fees are paid by the scholar.
• The EU Today course is 45 hours total over 15 weeks and meets 3 hours per week. The visiting scholar will teach up to 24 hours of the course.
• Details of the content of each session will be clarified once the scholar has been selected in conjunction with the other faculty teaching the course. The course is team-taught with Professor John Stephens as lead instructor.
• Preference will be given to scholars who have received their PhD in the last 5 years; a completed PhD is required.
• The timing of the teaching is flexible but must take place during the UNC spring semester 2018, which lasts from January through end of April (see Registrar’s calendar). Exact teaching dates will be settled once the scholar has been selected.
• The scholar is responsible for completing all visa paperwork as necessary.
