Film Screening: An Unforgettable Summer (Un été inoubliable)

November 13, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for a screening of the Romanian-language film, An Unforgettable Summer (Un été inoubliable) directed by the renown auteur Lucian Pintilie soon after the fall of communism, when his return to Romania became possible. The screening is hosted by Dr. Letitia Guran, Teaching Assistant Professor in the UNC-CH Department of Romance Studies.

An Unforgettable Summer is set in Romania in the 1920s and many saw it as an allegory of the tough ethical decisions Romanians faced during the five decades of communist rule. “What should one do when there seems to be no choice?” is the pivotal question of the movie. Captain Petre Dumitriu’s wife answers it by refusing the advances of her husband’s commanding officer. As a result, the cosmopolitan family is reassigned to a dark and dangerous outpost on the frontier between Bulgaria and Romania where their relationship and humanity are severely tested.
