Respectable Radicals and The Euro-Nationalist International: Explaining Right-Wing Populist Alliances in the European Parliament

Duncan McDonnell is Senior Lecturer in the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University, Brisbane. He was previously a Marie Curie Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

His main research interests are populist parties, Euroscepticism and party organizations. He is the co-author (with Daniele Albertazzi) of Populists in Power (Routledge, 2015) and the co-editor (with Nadia Marzouki and Olivier Roy) of Saving the People: How Populists Hijack Religion (OUP, 2016). He is currently working on a book with Annika Werner about the alliance strategies of right-wing populist parties in the European Parliament.

He currently holds two 3-year Australian Research Council Discovery Awards and a 4-year Swedish Research Council grant for projects on right-wing populist parties’ relationships with moderate parties, radical right youth wings in Europe, and Indigenous members of Australian parties.
