May ’68: New Approaches and Perspectives

February 10, 2017 - February 11, 2017

The main goal of the May ’68: New Approaches and Perspectives colloquium is to bring together, for a day of intensive intellectual exchange, scholars interested in May ’68 in France, as well as its sources, parallels, and after-effects, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Some of the papers presented will be published in a special issue of French Historical Studies, scheduled for publication in spring 2018, that will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the events of May.

The colloquium will take place at UNC, Duke, and the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park. It begins at 5:00 PM on Friday, February 10 in Rubinstein Library 153 at Duke with a keynote talk by Judith Coffin (University of Texas, Austin), “Sex, Gender, Generation: Simone de Beauvoir in 1968.” The day-long workshop on Saturday, February 11 will begin at 9:30 AM on February 11 at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park. Papers will be pre-circulated in late January to registered participants, who are expected to read all of the papers in advance. Authors will not read their papers aloud, but will begin with very short (five-minute) remarks on what kind of feedback would be most helpful. This will be followed by a ten-minute comment by a discussant, and then a general discussion of 60 minutes per paper. We anticipate discussing two in the morning and three after lunch. The workshop will conclude with a round-table led by Jeremey Popkin (University of Kentucky) and Boris Gobille (Sciences Po-Lyon).

If you would like to participate, please write to Lindsay Ayling by February 1 so that you can be given access to the papers.
