A Twentieth-Century Crusade: The Vatican’s Battle to Remake Christian Europe is the first comprehensive history of the Vatican’s agenda to defeat the forces of secular liberalism and communism through international law, cultural diplomacy, and a marriage of convenience with authoritarian and right-wing rulers.

Giuliana Chamedes is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a scholar of international and global history, with a focus on the place of Europe in the wider world. Her research centers on the history of internationalism, the Catholic Church, and economic development.

This event is co-sponsored by the UNC Department of History, Carolina Seminars, and Duke’s Center for International and Global Studies.
