Carolina Seminar on Transnational and Global Modern History

Our speaker is Dr. Sascha Auerbach, a Lecturer in Modern British and Colonial History at the University of Nottingham and currently a Leverhulme Research Fellow. His paper is entitled: “‘You Don’t Do Justice Betwixt I and Master:’ Early Responses to the Overseer State, 1823-1836.” The paper is part of his book project, an historical re-assessment of the transition from slavery to Indian and Chinese indentured labour in Britain’s tropical colonies.
Dr. Auerbach specializes in legal culture and the history of imperialism and colonialism in the nineteenth century. He is the author of Armed with Sword and Scales: Law, Culture and Local Courtrooms in London, 1865-1913 (CUP, 2021) and Race, Law, and “the Chinese Puzzle” in Imperial Britain (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2009). He is a former Fulbright Scholar and regularly serves as an on-air commentator for The Discovery Channel and The History Channel.
