ABOUT THIS PROJECT
REVOLUTION: The Iron Curtain in the Spotlight is a groundbreaking collaborative project between Burning Coal Theatre in Raleigh, NC, and the Center for European Studies of UNC-CH, largely in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. This interactive website, aimed at K-12 educators, can be used a lens through which teachers and students can understand the David Edgar Iron Curtain Trilogy and its context. It can also serve as a primer to the origins, key moments and players, and collapse of the Iron Curtain.
ABOUT CES
CES is consistently recognized among the top centers for European studies in the US. We are one of only five in the nation to be designated as both a National Resource Center by the US Department of Education and a European Union Center of Excellence by the EU. Our mission is to advance understanding of the social, political, and economic issues that shape contemporary Europe. We do this by enhancing undergraduate and graduate instruction, promoting scholarship and training for students and faculty, and stimulating institutional and public awareness of Europe through outreach in North Carolina and across the nation.
ABOUT CSEEES
The UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies fosters a deeper understanding of Eastern European and Eurasian countries through public outreach, area studies and language instruction, and conferences. ABOUT BURNING COAL THEATRE
Burning Coal is a small professional theatre company and an incorporated, non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organization. We emphasize works that are felt and experienced viscerally, unlike more traditional, linear plays where audiences are most often asked to observe without participating. Using the best local, national and international artists available, we produce explosive re-examinations of overlooked classics, modern and contemporary plays that address issues and themes poignant in our community. With this in mind, we strive to achieve high-energy performances with minimalist production values. Race and gender non-specific casting is an integral component of our perspective, as well as an international viewpoint.
