Thank you for your interest in advancing European research. Below are listed the main funding opportunities for UNC undergraduate students through CES. Except for the FLAS award, please apply to all awards through the online application below. Please take careful note of important deadlines.

Undergraduate Student Research Travel

Deadline: Ongoing

CES will offer two travel awards to UNC-CH undergraduate students to present research on the EU or on a comparative European topic (i.e. involving more than one European country) at domestic conferences. Typically, domestic awards range from $250-500. Applications are due at least one month before the intended date of travel.

Proposals should include: a completed application form, a brief (one-page) cover letter summarizing the project and other sources of funding, a curriculum vita, and a letter of support from a professor. All materials should be submitted to

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Grants

FLAS fellowships fund the study of less commonly taught languages and area studies coursework. This program provides academic year and summer fellowships to assist graduate students and advanced undergraduates in foreign language and area studies related to contemporary Europe.

Brussels Study Tour

CES will fund one undergraduate student to go on the Brussels Study Tour led by CES and our partner uninversities around the country. This is a chance for a student with an interest in European studies to further their knowledge with real, hands-on experience in Europe and the European Union. The trips dates are June 22 to 27, 2015.  Click here for more information.

Acknowledgement of support and reporting requirements: Funding for these awards is provided by the European Union and the U.S. Department of Education. Awardees are required to properly acknowledge support as indicated in the award letter. CES grantees must also submit a brief (one-page) report on the funded project at the end of the grant period.
