August 17, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Please join us for a free Film Screening:

Tuesday, August 22, 6PM
Fed Ex Global Education Center, Mandela Auditorium
Long is the Road (1948, dir. Herbert B. Fredersdorf & Marek Goldstein)
Runtime: 90 min
In German, Polish and Yiddish with English subtitles

Long is the Road is the first feature film to represent the Holocaust from a Jewish perspective. Made by and about Jewish displaced persons, the film was shot on location at Landsberg, the largest DP camp in U.S.-occupied Germany. Effectively mixing neorealist and expressionist styles, the film follows a Polish Jew (played by Israel Becker, one of the founders of the first professional Yiddish theater company in postwar Germany) and his family from the thriving Jewish community of prewar Warsaw through the horrors of Auschwitz to the frustrations and instability of refugee life in the DP camps, and culminates in the emergence of a hope for rebirth and renewal in Israel.

This film is being shown in conjunction with the Fall 2017 lecture class GERM 265, Hitler in Hollywood: Cinematic Representations of Nazi Germany.
Instructor and Contact for the Event: Dr. Priscilla Layne, playne@email.unc.edu.
